Ramping up my Cosplay Game!

Image
I have many previous cosplays I will eventually post, but my Alastor (Hazbin Hotel) cosplay is the first one I have documented the entire creation process of while making it.       I've been cosplaying since 2005 but was always more causal with the hobby (LOTS of closet cosplays, lol). Since covid I got even more lax and fell into a slump, until I finally watched Hazbin Hotel. I had been putting off watching the pilot until the actual show was released because I don't like suffering. (Even though I'm a masochistic millennial.) I saw Alastor's design beforehand due to fanart & the song "Insane" by Black Gryph0n & Baasik and I knew instantly he would probably be my favorite. Then my husband & I finally watched it and yep, Alastor is my favorite! Here's why: Red & Black are my favorite colors. I adore Vintage fashion. (monocles, capes & walking sticks need to make a come back!) I love Mid-Atlantic accents. Sharp teethies are cute.

Creation of my Alastor Cosplay (Alastor 2.0)

For Momocon, I upgraded my Alastor cosplay a fair amount, so I'm going to go over all the improvements one piece at a time, so buckle up! This will be a long one. The first and biggest piece was the coat.  Pretty sure I had gone insane by the time I finally finished this thing      I created the coat from a McCall's pattern (Costumes M7003) and heavily modified the shoulders of the pattern. I used some vintage red corduroy I got at a thrift shop as the main fabric and the sleeves & lining fabric is a wine red poplin. The love how well the corduroy worked for the look but my god is it a warm fabric. Atlanta was 95 F Momocon weekend when I wore the cos, so I melted like a little Alastor popsicle.       After getting the base coat done, I used a thick gauge sculpture wire & super stiff interfacing to give the coattail structure. Also, I added wire and padding into the shoulders to get that signature exaggerated shoulder look. Creating structure in cosplay is what I c

Creation of my Alastor Cosplay (Part 1)

Hey y'all! So today, I'm going to jump into documenting the creation of my Alastor cosplay. The first piece I made (also my favorite) is the microphone walking-stick thingy. So, When I create my cosplays I try reuse anything I can because (1) I'm a broke bitch and (2) I try my best to be environmentally friendly.* That being said my microphone is mostly "trash". The actually mic part is... um, well an old, well washed and sanitized, Bad Dragon lube bottle. Hey, don't judge! it was the perfect size and shape! The walking-stick part is an old curtain rod and the red pop filter part is scraps of EVA foam sheet. The top part of the mic part is half of a gashapon capsule filled with poly-fil stuffing. For Banzaicon, I put a LED tea light inside it so it would glow.  After Banzaicon I upgraded it with green flickering LEDs.     The next piece I created was the monocle. Its just larger gauge floral wire and red UV resin. I used this technique for creating the the

GOALS!!

Writing down my goals has always been a way to motivate me so I decided to share my goals with y'all! Cosplays I want to create/finish: Stolas & BlitzØ Disney Princess versions Lucifer & Alastor Disney Princess versions Niffty from Hazbin Hotel  Claire from Resident Evil 2 Kirishima from MY Hero (WIP) Kaiman from Dorohedoro Remake of my humanoid version of Shenron from Dragonball Vanessa from Black Clover Clara from Mairimashita! Iruma-Kun (WIP) Kaiju #8 from Kaiju # 8  Improvements I want to make to my Alastor cosplay: Adjust the coats fit: Take in the waist & shorten the length. Replace coat stripes with ones that are a more canon color. Secure raw edges in the coats lining. Fix the structure of the coat. Remake the gloves so they fit better. Rebuild the microphone cane? (Not sure cause I really love my current one, but it can be improved.) Fix shirt. (It busted during Momo) Create a canon Alastor wig & pants. Add LEDs or EL wire inside the collar & sleeve

(Most of) My Past Cosplays

I've always loved dressing up and sewing since I was little, Halloween is still my favorite holiday even today. I made my first cosplay in 2005. Before this I had only made doll clothing, so this was my first person sized sewing creation. I decided on Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas because it was peak emo era, lol. I spent several hours watching and pausing the movie to study her dress (reference pics on the internet were more limited back than). I sketched out the patterns of the rags that made up her dress. Then I used clean grease rags (the kind that is chopped up old clothing) from my dad's mechanic shop to piece together her dress: It was created for a Halloween party in 2005 but I finally got to wear it to Anime Weekend in Atlanta (AWA) in 2007.      For my first con, AWA 2006, I was Princess Serenity from Sailor Moon and Kid Goku, Dragonball version. Sadly, I have no pics of my original Kid Goku but I cosplayed him again years later and got a pic. Sin

Banzaicon & Momocon 2024

Image
I decided to cosplay fem Alastor last minute for Banzaicon (2024) In a few days I pulled a closet-ish cosplay out of my ass. Most of it were things I already owned but I created the monocle, Microphone, & antlers in a few days. Right before the con I heard of Akira Toriyama Sensei's passing. I'm a huge fan of his so that slowed me down, in fact it stopped me for more than a few hours. So, my cosplay could have been a bit better but taking time to honor Toriyama Sensei is more important.  Shenron plush I bought as Banzaicon     At Banzaicon I has so much fun! My friend Mea was Lillith and dragged me around on a chain for part of a day. We chilled with a Lucifer cosplayer for a bit. It was my friend Misha's first con and she had a blast.  My husband and I usually go to Momocon but this year we were on the fence until Misha said she also wanted to go. The final push for the decision was that Vivziepop & Bryce Pinkham (Stolas' VA) was on the guest list. So, to
